This targeting themes activity for Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare takes students through the process of coming to an understanding of how various elements of literature support themes. The elements focused on in this exercise are themes, setting, point of view, characters, and symbols. The point is for students to not only realize what the themes are in Julius Caesar, but also how they are developed by the author through other literary devices.
Three themes from Julius Caesar are provided as a starting point, though the PowerPoint is editable so you can change it to match whatever themes you are choosing to focus on. Most of the slides also include notes on how you can use that slide with your students.
Works great as a summation activity or a review after reading the novel. Could be used in conjunction with literature circles or as a brainstorming activity for a writing assignment concerning themes.
Useful in all types of classes that would read this story, including Honors or AP Literature and Composition courses. In Advanced Placement classes this works well to help students with exam essay questions that ask them to relate their answers to "the meaning of the work as a whole."
