RESILIENT CHILD RESEARCH:
Problems of poverty, gangs, drugs, and single-parent family threatened Reeve McClain, Jr. – Junebug -- from the moment he was born, but he was a “resilient child” whose special strength allowed him to live around gangs, poverty, drug dealers, and violence without being destroyed by them. He overcame the of the evil influences and became a success.
What was it that made Junebug successful? Like other rare, resilient kids, Junebug had four characteristics that allowed him to succeed. Kids Wings has integrated the resilient child research into the literature guide for Junebug by Alice Mead. It is only a 12-page, chapter-by-chapter guide for this profoundly important book of only 128 pages for all ages. Each of our pages helps readers to understand how Junebug fit the resilient child pattern. Though it is recommended for ages 8 - 12 and is an easy-read, the lessons that kids, parents, librarians, and teachers can learn though this story and our literature guide are probably more important than any other book we have ever taught. Junebug can help you prepare them for success in life!
Junebug is perfect for Black History Month and the other eleven months, too!!
As Junebug approached his tenth birthday, he knew that he would be expected to join a gang since ten was the pivotal age when boys in the projects are forced to join gangs or are enlisted forcefully by drug dealers. He decided to skip his birthday and remain nine instead. But, Junebug did have a birthday wish: to someday become a ship's captain and sail away. So Junebug came up with a plan to collect and then launch a flotilla of fifty glass bottles containing notes with his wish. Perhaps it would be possible that someone somewhere would help to make his dream come true.
