This is an addictive and super easy to set up card game for emergent readers. This game is all about learning the high frequency words and so it does exactly that in a fun and engaging way. My students are ESL kids (learning English as a second language) and they beg me every week to play this game and I’m confident your students will too.
There are 40 high frequency word cards each with a jungle animal picture
There are 9 special cards that give the player some kind of bonus or reward
There are 9 penalty cards that are to be avoided including the ultimate penalty ‘Lose all your cards!’
Included is a poster that shows all the words in the game (Dolch Pre-Kinder words).

How to make:
• Print all pages in the document on A4 paper.
• Reload the printer with the game card pages (be careful with paper orientation) and print the card back design (the last page of the document only) on the reverse side. Alternatively if you have a color copy machine you can do it that way.
• Laminate the pages and finally cut out cards using the lines on the front side,
• Alternatively print on to card stock.

How to play:

Object of the game is to win the most cards! (Easy Rules)
• Shuffle all the cards and place the deck face down in the center, this is the draw pile.
• The First player takes a card from the top of the pile and if it’s a high frequency word they read out the word. If they are correct they keep the card, if they are wrong the card goes back to the bottom of the draw pile.
• If the card is a special card do the following:
• TIGER ATTACK – lose all your cards to the discard pile.
• SPIDER BITE – lose ONE card to the discard pile.
• JUNGLE TRIBE – Miss the next turn (discard this card after)
• FIND GOLD TREASURE – keep this card and take another.
• YOU’RE LOST – play changes direction (discard this card)
• HEY CHEEKY MONKEY – take any card from another player.

• Continue playing until all the cards from the draw pile are used. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner!

• Game option 1 – if a player incorrectly reads a word the next player is given a chance to win that card as a bonus before their turn, if they also fail it goes to the next player etc. continue until someone is correct.
• Game option 2 – the first player to collect all 9 jungle animals is the winner.
• Game option 3 – as well as saying the sight word players try to make a sentence using the word.

More Information about Sight Words and High Frequency Words
Is there any difference between sight words and high frequency words? The two are often used side by side (as in my card game title). To be honest it’s much easier to just call all those words our students need to know sight words, but that is actually not correct.

High Frequency Words are the most commonly occurring words in print. Fry's Instant Words and Dolch Words are examples of high frequency words.

Sight Words are words that are recognized instantly without hesitation. Any word can become a sight word once it’s learned by heart (for example a child’s name). Most high-frequency words because of their very nature will become sight words for most children as they gain reading experience.

So in the case of this card game ‘high frequency words’ is a more accurate title but, because our goal is for the students to be able to read the word cards quickly and accurately they would have become sight words!

Dolch V. Fry?
The Dolch List has not been revised for decades, while the Fry list is more current. The Fry list also is more comprehensive in that it includes 1,000 words.

Dolch Words
The list was created in 1936 by Edward William Dolch, Ph.D and this list does not include any nouns. The Dolch Word List of 220 words includes the most frequently used words in the English language. Sight words make up 50 to 70% of any general text. The Dolch list is organized by grade and frequency from kindergarten to grade 3. The Dolch list includes both decodable and non-decodable words

Fry’s 1000 Instant Words

Edward Fry, Ph.D. created his list in 1957 and revised the list again in 1980. The list was taken from the American Heritage list, which ranks the frequency of words as they occur in materials used in grades 3-9. The Fry 1,000 Instant Words are a list of the most common words used for teaching reading, writing, and spelling. It is difficult to write a sentence without using several of the first 300 words in the Fry 1,000 Words List. The words are listed by frequency in blocks of 100 and the Fry list is also made up of both decodable and non-decodable words.
