Here is a book that helps children see how caring for others is indeed a gift to be treasured!
Grace uses EMPATHY as her SUPERPOWER!
JUST GRACE by Charise Mericle Harper is told in the first person by Grace:
I didn't get to be the magician's helper at my own birthday party. I didn't get to be a singing, dancing corncob in the Thanksgiving play, and I didn't get to be in the talent show! How would you like to NOT get to do lots of things you wanted to do? Bad, huh? Well, then, you will understand how I felt when I didn't even get to use my own name, Grace, at school because there were three other Graces in my class. The other Graces became Grace W., Grace L., and Grace F. When I asked the teacher if I could be called just "Grace," she misunderstood and called me "Just Grace." Isn't that the dumbest name in the whole world?
I'm not sure if anyone felt sorry for me, but I DO know that something inside me makes ME feel sorry for others who are sad. And, when I see someone sad, I have to DO something to try to make them happy. Daddy calls it "empathy" and says that it is my superpower. (If you are lucky, you have that superpower, too.)
I like thinking I have a superpower, but it isn't always easy to find something to cheer up a sad person. I think you will like the book I wrote about one special time when I tried to cheer up a teacher who just happens to be my neighbor. I have even drawn some cartoons on almost every page!
