It’s critical in the early years to have a good base vocabulary, so when students move on to third grade they will be prepared for reading to learn.
Working as a Language-Speech-Hearing Specialist, I have come across many students who have had language disorders in the area of semantics and required vocabulary goals which included naming the functions and attributes of 20 common objects and/ or categorizing. I created these worksheets in a thematic format and paired them with books that correspond to each theme.
Each page has it's very own theme with wh- questions and includes games such as:
(1) Attention to Attributes: Students are expected to explain what they see (e.g., explain what you see, describe the shapes colors, size, etc...).
(2) Category Capers: Students are given a set category and are asked to circle the words that belong.
(3) Name that Category: Students are provided with three words and they name the category.
(4) Did I Do That: Students explain what the item in question does.
