This small group reader's theater was written for 4 students and for Halloween. This is the Irish legend of Stingy Jack which is where some say the Jack O Lantern originated. In the script, Stingy Jack tricks the devil twice. The first time he tricked the devil into becoming a coin and trapped him. The second time he trapped him in an apple tree. When he died, the heaven didn’t want him and the devil wouldn’t take him. Because of this he was sent back to Earth. The devil gave him a glowing ember to light his way and Stingy Jack keeps it in a hollow turnip. This is how some say the Jack-O-Lantern came about. There is a short writing assignment afterwards for students. Please make sure you look at the preview before buying this. I go out of my way not to use the word hell in the script but the story IS about the devil. I write reader's theaters because I find them to be an excellent way to motivate all readers, including reluctant ones, to practice fluency. I write small group scripts because the ONLY way reader's theater works is when there is very little wait time. In scripts with lots of characters, students spend time off-task or waiting to read this does not help them become fluent. My scripts are mostly black and white so that they can be reproduced on a copier easier with less ink. Please note, I have not advertised this for 4th grade but, if you have a higher group, you could use it. My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. If they do, check out some of my other scripts. There are several for Halloween and many other topics. Thankyou!
