This STEM product combines 2 great things: Halloween and geometry! Students are challenged to create paper jack-o’-lanterns using plane shapes (k-1st) or a combination of plane and solid shapes (2nd & 3rd.) The requirements and the design briefs are differentiated by grade level, and include size and feature restraints. This activity is perfect for early in the school year as your students are adjusting to the demands of working within set STEM criteria.
This STEM product includes:
-instructions for use
-background information for students
-suggested literature links
-criteria for the challenge
-examples to evaluate
-design brief for students (choose from k-1st or 2nd-3rd)
-an evaluation tool
-suggested materials and tools
My students find this activity challenging, but completely non-threatening so it works wonderfully as we get our minds ready for a year of STEM activities.
