Jack and the Beanstalk: Fiction and Non-Fiction fun is a lesson designed to align with the new Common Core State Standards. It teaches students how to interact with text in a way that develops their critical thinking skills. The activities that go along with the text are built around an essential question that students need to answer. It contains both a fiction and non-fiction passage, literature circle forms for two levels of readers, an informational text lesson plan with vocabulary, an essential question which requires two written responses, and two different directed note-taking forms to choose from. Altogether, it is a 5-8 day lesson.
It is geared towards first and second grade. Kindergarten teachers can use it as a whole class activity. It may also be appropriate for third grade at the beginning of the year, or for third graders who struggle to read on grade level.
