Use jack-o-lantern faces to teach your students about emotions. Kids can practice their social skills up at the board, in their seats, or even on the bulletin board. This mini-unit contains three complete lessons (about 30 minutes each) and focuses on four overriding emotions: happy, sad, mad, afraid.
Lesson 1: Identifying emotions with jack-o-lantern faces
Students work in pairs to create jack-o-lantern faces and brainstorm about what made their pumpkin feel that way.
Lesson 2: Expressing emotions - vocabulary for feelings
Students brainstorm synonyms for emotion words and create a shape book, pairing vocabulary with jack-o-lantern faces.
Lesson 3: Reflecting on emotions - sense poems
Students use sensory images from their own experiences to write poetry about emotions.
