Jackie Robinson-

I created this unit to help teachers find grade appropriate resources to integrate science and social studies into the guided reading block. This unit contains:

• Vocabulary Cards- Five vocabulary cards with photographs are included. The words featured on the cards are segregation, integration, civil rights, track, and awards. Please note that only the words track and awards are in the running text. The others are provided to build background knowledge for students.

• The Man Who Changed Baseball- Three very similar leveled readers about Jackie Robinson are included. The books are written at approximately: beginning of second grade level, middle of second grade level, and end of second grade level. Please note the levels reflect the RUNNING text, not the text features. The text features are the same in all the books and would drive up the independent reading levels. I HIGHLY suggest previewing all of the text features with students before requiring them to read independently.

• Comprehension Questions- There are five questions about the text for students to answer. The answers to the questions are found in every level of the book. An answer key is included.

• Connecting Historical Events (Sequencing) - There are six cards highlighting important events in Jackie Robinson’s life. Discuss with students how the events are related and connected to one another. Have students order the event cards using sequencing words. A cut and paste recording sheet with answer key that matches the cards is also included.

• Connecting Historical Events (Cause and Effect)- There are four sets of cause and effect cards (8 in total). Students can match the cause to the correct effect. Many of the causes are very similar. If the teacher chooses, the teacher can reduce the similar causes to show students how ONE cause can have more than one result. The cards are coded with a picture. The cards with a baseball photograph are causes and the cards with a glove photograph are effects. A recording sheet with answer key that matches the cards is also included.

• Identifying Text Features- Students will match cards with pictures of the text features from the Jackie Robinson book to a card with the name of the text feature. Since all the text features in all three books are the same, all groups can use this activity.

• Writing about Reading- Several activities are included.

o A graphic organizer is included for students to describe Jackie Robinson, using character traits. Students must cite text evidence and the page where they found the evidence.
o Students can write an Important Poem about Jackie Robinson. This is a great way to reinforce main idea and supporting details.
o Two Venn Diagrams are included so that students can compare Jackie Robinson to themselves or Jackie Robinson to Martin Luther King Jr.
o Finally, a blank baseball card template is included. Copy the baseball card pages front to back. Students can research another famous baseball player and create a baseball card.

Some of these activities may be more appropriate at the end of a Jackie Robinson unit where students can respond using all their knowledge about Jackie Robinson from several different resources.
