I wasn't fully satisfied with some of the more expensive JHIL resources that I purchased when I first began teaching this novel, so I supplemented them by creating some of my own resources to fill in the gaps. In this Resources pack, you'll receive more than 20 pages of fun activities, quizzes, and essay materials to use with your students. All of my files are uploaded as Microsoft Word documents, so they can easily be tweaked or adjusted if necessary to fit your specific needs.
Specifically, here is what you can expect:
-An engaging worksheet to go along with a video interview with Katherine Paterson (you can freely access this video online, but I have also conveniently uploaded it as a WMV file so that it can be played on your LCD projector even without an internet connection). The handout that goes with the video will help your students to stay focused and engaged. I used this as a way to introduce the text and the author.
-3 Reading Check Quizzes and Corresponding Answer Keys for more than 7 different chapters (I didn't have time to quiz over every chapter, and since I would often assign several chapters at a time between our classes, I didn't have a need for a separate quiz over every chapter). The quizzes are 10 questions each and are a mix of multiple choice and short answer. Chapters covered are: Chapter 3, 9-10, and 13-18.
-A complete essay package that includes:
1. Instructions and Rubric - these items are both very straightforward and lay out the process and expectations clearly for the student (there are also several different options for the essay prompt for the student to choose from, and the accompanying pre-writing sheet allow for these various options as well). Rubric is clear and easy to use.
2. Detailed Pre-Writing Sheet - includes plenty of instructions, reminders, and graphic organizers to help set up their essays for success!
3. Essay Structure PPT and Handout - In order to help students to visualize the layout of their essays, I have created a "Candy" graphic organizer that helps them to see where their thesis statements go, what the body of the paper should look like, etc...(available as a PPT with a corresponding handout for students to follow along)
4. Thorough Peer Edit Sheet - This item is not your typical peer edit sheet...so much more than just a "checklist" for the kids. It requires them to think critically and write thoughtfully about each other's essays.
