While I use a lot of fun novels to build my student's love of reading, I wanted to add an historical novel based on a true story that would open great doors for discussion. Never did I think my students would enjoy this novel as much as they did. They loved the intrigue, the fact that it "could have happened," and that the young man in the story was just their age!
We used this novel for our open house presentation for the parents and the kids were proud to have learned so much about this horrific period in our world's history. They had a certain sense of pride as they shared their part in the open house presentation.
This historical novel is based upon a true story of a young boy who is left with a Gentile family during the Holocaust and the creative ways they helped him survive as they had him in hiding in their home. It's real.....it's age appropriate.....it's a great first story about the Holocaust!
