When we sound out words and they don't follow our normal phoneme blending pattern, I call them 'jail words' (as they don't follow the rules). We encounter these words daily.
Here's a fun way to practice and identify those irregular words.
Students sound out and read the word cards. I've also included a blank card for future words you come across in daily lessons. Just fill it out and add to your collection.
Teach whole group, then place in a center. Words can be changed out as you advance through the year. A response sheet is included.
