Jamaica Kincaid is a contemporary Antiguan-American writer. Her most anthologized short story is the very brief, but powerful, “Girl.” My handout analyzes its theme, episodic plot, characters (protagonist and antagonists), and the male-dominated culture which Kincaid brutally, yet at times comically, depicts. The handout, which has blanks students can fill in, is suitable for a homework assignment or as an in-class activity. An answer key is provided on a separate page at the end of the handout.
