Are you looking for an engaging way to teach about James Armistead Lafayette?

Rap songs are the solution!

This activity is based on rap songs that explore the contributions of James Armistead Lafayette who served as an African American spy during the American Revolution, his relationship with General Marquis de Lafayette who was instrumental in helping James gain his freedom, and how their efforts lead to American independence.

Students will listen to the songs then use the song lyrics as reading passages to complete the activities detailed below.

Teaching Virginia Studies?

This activity covers the Virginia Studies 5 SOL: contributions of Virginians such as James Armistead Lafayette and General Marquis de Lafayette who participated in the Revolutionary War in Virginia. It also addresses Virginia Studies SOL .5B - identifying the roles played by Virginians during the American Revolutionary War.

Even if you don't teach VA studies, this activity is an excellent way to teach about an important Black American with an exciting story and his contributions to America!

How to use this activity:

- Students will preview the comprehension questions on page 1 then listen to the songs on YouTube while following along with the lyrics on pages 2 and 3.

- Students will then answer the questions on page 1. When students are done, they can continue to be engaged by completing the extension activities on page 4.

- The extension activities include:

  • an inferencing activity
  • instructions for students to use the song's instrumental for writing their own songs about James Armistead and General Lafayette.

- The answer key for page 1 is located on page 5.
