James Madison Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- This is a 14 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 41 questions based on a History Channel video (The U.S. Presidents Series on YouTube) and the History.com website.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the U.S. Presidents Series Video: James Madison (on YouTube). The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of James Madison's presidency. This video will first analyze what kind of person Madison was, a veteran, the author of the Constitution, and a Jeffersonian Democrat. The video then focuses on the War of 1812, specifically its causes and the role Madison played in the conflict. The crisis's that Madison faced, humiliating defeats, the burning of Washington, and a secessionist movement in New England are reviewed, as is the Treaty of Ghent which ends the war. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website and read a biographical article about James Madison. His early years, his drafting of the Constitution and Bill of Rights while in Congress, the founding of the Democrat-Republicans, and his time as Jefferson's Secretary of State are all covered. The article again reviews his two terms as president and concludes with his final years and death.
