If your class studies the War of 1812 and the emergence of the United States as a world power this set will really add to your lessons. The War of 1812 is often called "the second war of independence" The war between the United States and Great Britain was mainly fought at sea and on the Great Lakes. Land battles were fought on the U.S. and Canadian border and often involved native allies. Early on, Great Britain took command of the Atlantic coast and scored numerous victories including the invasion of Washington and the burning of the White House. President James Madison and the First Lady narrowly escaped capture. During the British bombardment of Baltimore, Francis Scott Key penned "The Star-Spangled Banner" while being held prisoner on a British warship. The war ended in 1815 with the Treaty of Ghent, despite the end of the conflict days before, Andrew Jackson and the American troops routed a British force at New Orleans. The war left no decisive victorious side yet led America to a prosperous time in history known as "The Era of Good Feeling".
