1870 Parents die; moves to live with aunt and uncle in Bennie’s Corners, Ontario
1887 Graduates from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
1890 Becomes a Presbyterian minister
1891 Invents basketball; at the YMCA in Springfield, MA
1891 first basketball game played December 21
1894 Marries Maude Sherman on June 20
1895 Becomes director of physical education at YMCA in Denver, CO
1895 James and Maude’s 1st of 5 children born on July 2
1898 Earns medical degree from University of Colorado Medical School
1899 Becomes assistant gymnasium director at Kansas University
1909 becomes professor, and doctor at the University of Kansas
1913 James and Maude have their 5th and last child, a boy named James on May 7
1914 Serves as captain/chaplain in Kansas First Infantry regiment due to World War I
1917 Military and YMCA secretary in France
1919 Becomes Athletic Director of University of Kansas
1925 Becomes United States citizen
1936 Is honored at the Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany
1937 James’ wife, Maude, passed away
1939 Naismith married his 2nd wife, Florence Kincaid, on June 1
1939 James Naismith dies on November 28 in Lawrence, Kansas
