This James and the Giant Peach Novel Unit is such a fun way to engage your intermediate students in reading and writing!!! James and the Giant Peach, by Roald Dahl, is a timeless classic that students of all ages love.
This unit is designed to teach reading strategies, as well as teaching poetry writing in response to student reading. Students will need a reading journal, either a journal they regularly use or a separate journal (paper stapled together the included journal cover would work great). Included in this unit...
1. vocabulary for each chapter
2. vocabulary activities
3. vocabulary and comprehension quizzes that cover a few chapters each
4. detailed lesson plans that align well with common core
5. anchor charts, graphic organizers, and other informational ideas
6. a cumulative poetry project
My view on teaching a novel unit is to teach it like a book club – My students are always allowed to use their books when answering questions, as they are allowed to go back to look for answers on state testing. They are also encouraged to discuss what they are thinking and learning with their peers.
If you are happy with my unit, please leave me a complimentary rating. If you have any questions/concerns, please email so I can help make this a great learning experience for you and your students.
Check out my teachers pay teachers store for more classroom and teaching items. You will find a Poetry Anchor Chart set that goes well with the poetry in this unit.
