2015 Standards Packet include the following:
Jamestown 5 W’s: Includes blank chart, plus a completed chart to use as answer key or to give directly to students. On blank chart, students fill in the who, when, where, what and why for Jamestown. Covers VS3a
Jamestown Geography Now and Then: Students draw a picture of Jamestown’s geography in 1607 (a peninsula) and its geography now (an island). Then they write a sentence describing the geography then and now. Answer Key Included. VS3b, VS1e (compare/contrast life then and now)
Reasons for Picking Jamestown’s Location: Students write one reason for picking that location in each of the four boxes and illustrate the reasons. Answer key included. VS 3b
Cause and Effect: Each student cuts apart the cards and matches each cause to its effect. Use the answer key to check their work. Students can then glue the correct answers into their notebook or a separate sheet of paper. Early finishers can illustrate one of the cause and effects. VS3 e,f,g; VS1f (cause/effect)
Hardships Cloze: Each sheet contains two copies of the cloze activity. Students fill in the blanks to describe the hardships settlers at Jamestown faced and the changes that helped them survive. VS3f
Government Web: This activity includes a partially completed web on Jamestown’s government. Students fill in the missing spots of the web. Answer Sheet included. VS3d
Jamestown Location Map: Each sheet contains two copies of the map. Students label the locations of the Chesapeake Bay (pt. A), James River (pt. B) and Jamestown (pt. C). They can then glue this into their notebooks. VS 3b
Word Cloud: On the computer, students follow the directions on the sheet to create a word cloud of Jamestown vocabulary. They check off the step-by-step directions. You can decide if students can use their notes to think of words, or if they need to use simply their memories. Afterwards, students can print the page for a grade. Sample word cloud included. Cause and Effect for Jamestown Location—Students learn that decisions can have multiple reasons (causes) for making them and can have multiple results (effects). They examine the reasons why settlers chose the site they did for Jamestown and the results of that chose. They think of and write two of their own causes and effects in the chart. Text Messaging Between Historical Characters—Pick two characters from the Jamestown time period and create a text message conversation between the two of them. Planning worksheet and conversation sheet included. Give students multiple conversation sheets for longer text messages. VS3a-g, 1j (investigate and research and present in writing)
Costs and Benefits Chart—Students learn about costs and benefits of decision making (in this case, whether or not to move to Jamestown). They fill in the cost and benefit chart and then make the decision themselves whether or not to move and why or why not. VS3a,b,f; 1g (costs and benefits)
Virginia Company of London Recruitment Poster-Students create a poster advertising for open positions to sail to Jamestown on the ships chartered by the Virginia Company of London. VS3a, c, 1d (consider different points of view historically)
