I created these task cards because my students needed more practice with primary source passages. On our annual standardized test, students are asked to read and analyze primary source passages. Our textbook contains absolutely no primary source passages, so I began to research and find passages to use with my students.
Before using these task cards, I pull a couple of the task cards and we read, analyze, and answer the questions together. I explain to my students that they will need to use their critical thinking skills. Some of the words in these primary sources passages are spelled differently than our modern English. However, if they read carefully, the meanings will be clear.
These quotes are directly from primary source documents concerning Jamestown. Very few words have been changed to aid understanding.
In my classroom, I break students into group of 3-4. Each group receives a Response Sheet. I hand 3 task cards to each group. I remind them to match the task card number with the number on the response sheet. I ask students to bring the cards, when they are finished with them, to a central location and choose new cards. I expect each group to answer each task card.
