Jammin’ with the “J” sound is a packet designed to focus on the "J" sound from multiple angles. Look at the "J" sound through auditory bombardment, sound production, and spelling patterns. Play with it using dominoes, word sorts, and a sound search. Students will experience the connection of how the sound is produced, spelled, and heard. Activities include:
48 Dominoes: 12 each for the spelling patterns j, g, ge, dge. Grouped by spelling to help practice the spelling patterns. Students will be using association memory strategies through the visual pictures and the action of pairing up matches…all while playing a fun game! Cards are color coded by spelling pattern for easy sorting and visual distinction (another memory strategy!).
4 square sorting mat: All 48 words are mixed on one page. Students can highlight each spelling pattern a different color. My students will use crayons to coordinate with the existing red, blue, green, purple color code. Using the sorting mat, students will either write or cut/paste words into the correct spelling pattern.
Auditory Bombardment and sound production: Use the word list that goes along with the 4 square sorting mat. Parents, teachers, and therapists can read to students for auditory bombardment and exposure to the “J” vocabulary. The word list can then be used to practice sound production at the word level and for sentence creation. Point out differences in spelling and location within the word. Useful for therapy, home practice, or RTI in the classroom.
4 sound posters: Each spelling pattern has 12 word/picture pairs. Can keep as is (2 patterns per page) or cut into 4 separate posters. I like to use posters like this as part of my ticket in/out system.
Word sort: Sort words onto j/g or ge/dge mat. Differentiate by using either word/picture combos or picture only cards to sort “J” sound based on spelling pattern. There are 24 j/g pictures on one page and 24 ge/dge pictures on another. Students can sort 24 words between 2 patterns at a time, or for a greater challenge can sort all 48 words between all 4 patterns.
Sound search: Using 4 different categories (kitchen, clothing, exercise, people/animals), list words with the “J” sound. Students could use the sound posters to brainstorm. This is a great activity for home or class carryover.
Sound cues: Reminders for placement for “J”, end sounds, multi-syllable, and placement in words.
Teacher/Parent Notes: Send with the student a the end of a therapy session to encourage carryover in class and at home. Gives production cues and a space to write words to practice.
