PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

An entire unit filled with extension activities for Jan Brett's books. (Includes 12 files below; answer keys not included unless noted in the description below)

1) Author Study Booklet: Students create a booklet about the author to serve as a keepsake memory.
2) Author's Fingerprints: Print and display these signs to track the author's fingerprints as you discover them with your students. Perfect for using on an author's showcase bulletin board!
3) The Mitten - Similes and Story Sequencing Activities: After reading The Mitten, students will write similes about mittens they create. Students will also practice sequencing story events in this activity.
4) The Mitten - Parts of Speech Activity: After reading The Mitten, students will use parts of speech to write a riddle about an animal hiding in their mitten in this activity.
5) The Hat Activities: After reading The Hat, students will complete a Venn diagram comparing/contrasting the story to The Mitten. Students will also explore Hedgie's outer and inner character traits and sequence story events in this activity.
6) The Umbrella Activity: After reading The Umbrella, students will complete a three-way Venn diagram comparing/contrasting the story to The Mitten and The Hat.
7) Trouble with Trolls Activities: After reading Trouble With Trolls, students will identify how Treva was able to respond to challenges and take a closer look at the trolls by examining the bottom border. Students will also decide what type of pet would be best for a troll and write an opinion piece to display with a troll craft in this activity.
8) The Wild Christmas Reindeer Activities: After reading The Wild Christmas Reindeer, students will draw and write about how Teeka changed from the beginning of the story to the end. Students will also create a reindeer craft to display with the author's message in this activity.
9) Gingerbread Baby Activities: After reading Gingerbread Baby, students will identify outer and inner traits of the Gingerbread Baby. Students will also complete a questioning flipper and a Venn diagram to compare the original version of The Gingerbread Boy to Jan Brett's Gingerbread Baby in this activity.
10) Armadillo Rodeo Activities: After reading Armadillo Rodeo, students will use evidence from the text to show proof of character traits. Students will also write about their own red-hot-chili-pepper-exciting-day in this activity. Makes a great writing display with the included cowboy boot and chili pepper patterns!
11) Other Folktale Comparison Activities: Students use the included comparison pages to compare the following stories to their original counterparts: The 3 Little Dassies (The Three Little Pigs), The 3 Snow Bears (Goldilocks and the Three Bears), Cinders: A Chicken Cinderella (Cinderella)
12) Miscellaneous Brett Activities: Jan Brett tips, beginning, middle, and end story summary pages, a character map, and a planning and letter writing page that can be used for students to write letters to Jan Brett during the author study.
