This product contains an assessment for Jan Richardson’s suggested sight words for guided reading level C. This product is intended for students in kindergarten and struggling students in higher grade levels.
•A pre-assessment to use if you do not already know which words they are familiar with. It includes both a reading and writing section. Jan mentions in her book that a student truly knows a sight word if they can read AND write it. If the writing piece is too much try folding it down the middle so students only do 5 at a time.
•A sheet to send home so parents can practice at home. I use this piece to do a quick reading assessment and send it home the same day.
•Cards to use in small group if you choose. I have included dots under each letter. I suggest students tap each dot and say the letter name then read the word following the arrow. This is another extension I use along with Jan’s finger push with letter tiles.
•A booklet for the written assessment. Read the sight word to the student(s). Then have the students write their own sentence (not a dictated one) this lets me know if they know the meaning of the word. I do have to model this part a lot so I believe that a dictated is okay.
•A teacher data sheet. I write the students name along the top then fill in the date that the student has mastered the word. I require my students to read and write the word to consider it mastered.
•A student word wall. You can include this in their writing folder, book bag, or keep them handy at your small group table.
