A 3-step guide to creating a chimpanzee's habitat. A great way to introduce this topic is viewing Jane Goodall's video on Youtube and talking about her job as a primatologist and anthropologist. Follow it up with the Disneynature's Chimpanzee. As an additional activity, the class can also research and debate the ethical issue of chimpanzee testing for research.
This is a 5-page PDF file containing an "operation habitat" guide on building a comfortable habitat for a chimpanzee. Skills include creativity and imagination, research and recall, critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, citing sources, collaboration, and teamwork.
When students are done with the habitat guide, they can make their habitat come to life by creating a model out of a shoebox. Use recycled materials to keep green! I originally made this for my 6th graders but it is flexible enough to use with third grade and up.
Kids love to use their imagination and designing skills to make a habitat model of their own!
