The Janissary, or “new soldiers,” were one of the key instruments of the Ottoman Empire that enabled it to continue for over six centuries. Your students will be looking at two documents from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Tribute of Children of 1493 describes how the Janissary were first formed, recruited, and trained. The excerpt from The Turkish Letters, 1555-1562 describes their organization and behavior seventy years later. They will be using these sources to write an acrostic on the Janissary.
