Written as acrostic poems, these Winter holiday posters are great for teaching about the cultural traditions of New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day. They are also great models when teaching a poetry unit. Writing and grammar activities plus 5 suggestions for orally discussing the holidays are included, too.
Two writing tasks are included:
* Students invent a holiday and write an acrostic poem about it.
* Students select and then describe how they celebrate one of the holidays.
A grammar task to rewrite the text on the posters by including the definite article "the" is also included.
Blank acrostic poem templates for each holiday are provided so students can write their own poems about the holidays.
The discussion topics can be used with both native English speakers and English Language Learners, including ELLs at a beginning level of proficiency.
A page listing the ELA Common Core standards this resource helps address is included for your convenience if you teach in a Common Core state.
