Product Description
Eight no-prep blended learning activities provide hours of independent learning for third grade, fourth grade, or fifth grade students. This January Independent Learning Module includes an 11-page student booklet, answer keys, rubric, and an interactive website. Kids engage in meaningful online learning experiences on their devices (computer, Chromebook, iPad, etc.) and respond in their packets. It's a teacher’s (or parent's) dream come true!

Created by master teacher Brenda Kovich, these activities are classroom-tested and kid-approved. The ILM is also part of the Independent Learning Module Bundle, which includes all nine monthly ILMs at a discount price. Click here to view all of them.

What Is It?
Each Independent Learning Module (ILM) merges digital content with engaging activities. The specially designed website houses texts, presentations, and learning links. It was designed to keep high third grade students, average to high fourth grade students, and all fifth grade students working independently.

For increased Internet safety, all videos have been saved using Safeshare.tv, which eliminates ads and links to related videos.

How Can I Use It?
• Online Fun for All - The January ILM provides fun, meaningful instruction and practice for your entire class. Use it all or pick and choose for specific subjects.
• I’m Done, Now What? - Let the independent learning module provide anchor activities for early finishers or enrichment activities for gifted and talented learners.
• Five Minutes Peace (and More!) - Are you behind on grading? Do you need to meet with individual students or small groups? The independent learning module will keep your students busy for hours.
• Sub Plans - For a full day (or two) of sub plans, just leave the ILM! Kids will learn, work independently, and have fun.
• Homeschool (or Learn at Home) – Hey, parents! This is a great way to enhance your homeschool curriculum. It’s also fantastic for kids who go to school but need some extra enrichment at home.

What’s Included?
This month’s ILM features winter activities for eight subjects. Pick and choose or use them all!

Informational Text - Primary and Secondary Sources
• ILM Online - Students watch a video that explains how primary and secondary sources differ. They then explore examples of primary and secondary sources for Wilson Bentley, the Snowflake Man.
• ILM Packet - Students identify which sources are primary and which are secondary.

Language - Commonly Confused Words
• ILM Online - Four entertaining videos explain the difference between its and its; there, their, and they’re; your and you’re, and who’s and whose.
• ILM Packet - Students read a short winter story and choose the correct word from each set of commonly confused words. (For more practice, try the worksheets at http://englishlinx.com/content-by-subject/grammar/word-usage/commonly-confused-words/.)

Listening – Snowboarding
• ILM Online - A five-minute video shows 10 beginner snowboard skills.
• ILM Packet - Students take notes on the skills and explain each.

Literature - Jack Frost/Personification
• ILM Online - Students watch a short video on personification. They read a three-page story entitled “When Jack Frost Was Young” and a poem entitled “Jack Frost” then watch an eight-minute video depicting Jack Frost.
• ILM Packet - Students define personification, list human-like tasks Jack Frost performs in each genre, identify character traits Jack Frost has in each, and explain which character type they like best and why.

Math – Symmetry
• ILM Online - Students watch a video to learn about reflectional symmetry then play an online game to practice. They watch another video about rotational symmetry then practice with an online activity. For the grand finale, they create their own snowflakes with an online simulator and analyze symmetry.
• ILM Packet - Reflectional symmetry for regular polygons is explored. (If you’d like your students to explore rotational symmetry, give them an additional copy of the sheet. They can cut out each shape and rotate it to find rotational symmetry.)

Science – Snow
• ILM Online - Kids watch one video of snowflakes forming and another that discusses the physics of snowflakes. Four links provide supporting informational text.
• ILM Packet - Questions focus on the science of snow. Answers can be found in the second video and links to informational text.

Social Studies - How People Use Snow
• ILM Online - Students read an article from the National Snow and Ice Data Center and watch a video to discover productive ways people use snow.
• ILM Packet - They pull information from both sources to answer questions then consider innovative ways to use snow stacked up in parking lots.

Writing - How to Build a Snow Fort
• ILM Online - Kids watch three videos of cool snow forts.
• ILM Packet - They design their own snow forts, list five (or fewer) steps to build them, then write an informative essay explaining the process.

What Standards Are Covered?
