This is a fun, seasonal poem that is a great read aloud for any K-5 classroom. I use poems to practice reading fluency and expression. This poem is 70 words - by the end of 2nd grade students should be able to read 90 wpm - so this is the perfect length for January. I read the poem to the students, then have the students read the poem. I record them reading on day 1, then we practice the poem frequently (daily or weekly, time permitting) and then I record them on the last day of the month and have them listen to both recordings to hear how their fluency and expression have changed. I record the wpm at the beginning and at the end so they can see their progress, as well as hear it.
