Tanka is a Japanese poetry style that has been popular in Japan for hundreds of years. Family members and friends often exchanged Tanka poems that they wrote and many Japanese participated in Tanka poetry competitions during the Heian period, Japan's Golden Age. The project offers several topics that were important during Japan's Golden Age and after researching the time period (in textbooks or Internet), students create Tanka poems.
