The Kamakura era in Japan was a time of change in the Buddhist religion with a number of major sects today tracing their roots to that epoch. The three major sects in Japan today and their founders are Shinran and the True Pure Land Sect, Nichiren and the Nichiren Sect, and Dogen and Zen. Utilizing the writings of these religious leaders each group of six students will be creating a book a book entitled “Japanese Buddhism for Dummies.” In a Common Core approach, the students will read complex primary sources and demonstrate their understanding through concise writing.
