Description
Objectives
- By the end of this activity, students will know how to write a haiku poem and understand the rules of haiku-writing.
- Students will also have a deeper awareness of how syllables work within a Spanish word.
- Students will have practice writing with Spanish nature vocabulary, applying basic verb conjugations in the present tense to the lines of the poem.
Activity Summary
Students will read and analyze three examples of traditional Japanese haiku poetry and imitate the form with a haiku poetry-writing exercise in English. They will follow the 5-7-5 rule of haiku and focus on nature imagery, knowing that they will need to write a haiku in Spanish for homework, all the while reinforcing their understanding of Spanish nature vocabulary and verb conjugation in the present tense.
