Japanese Fan Craft!

Are you looking to infuse a bit of Japanese culture or global learning into your classroom? Is your class going to have a party and you want something fun and interesting to get the class excited for it? Is your school going to have a pep rally and you want your class to have something to cheer with? Do you often play games with your class and are looking for something students can use to answer with? Is it almost summer vacation and you want your class to have something memorable to stay cool with?

Look no further! This craft is perfect for all of those things and many more!

This type of fan is called uchiwa (oo-chi-wah) and it is one of several types of fans used in Japan. Uchiwa are often used in festivals to cheer on their town and many businesses give them out in the summer as a way to market and keep customers cool. Traditional uchiwa are made of wood and paper but many are now being made from plastic!

This craft is simple to make. Each person making a fan requires 2 fan sheets, 2 popsicle sticks, and glue. That's it! If card stock is used for the fans, you will not have to laminate or otherwise reinforce your fans. But it is up to you! In 3 simple steps, your class will have their own fans!

1. Give each student 2 fan sheets and 2 popsicle sticks. Make sure glue and coloring utensils are available.

2. Let students color in the designs provided or create their own on the blank fan. Once finished, cut the fans out and glue them back to back so the designs face out. With younger students, you may want to do this and the following parts on your own!

3. Glue a popsicle stick to the bottom of each fan so they face back to back and form one handle. Jumbo sticks will be easier to hold!

And you're finished!

Included in this pack are the following fans:
• watermelon
• koi fish (Japanese carp)
• ninja with ninja written in Japanese (忍者) and a shuriken (throwing star)
• number 1 written in Japanese (ichiban 一番)
• festival written in Japanese (matsuri 祭)
• NO (great for games!)
• YES (great for games!)
• Party Time! with a popper (great for parties!)
• Go Team! (great for pep rallies!)
• a blank fan for you and your students to design whatever you would like!
