I am excited to share with you a comprehensive 8-page packet I use with my students when we are writing research essays on jazz musicians? Why jazz, you ask? I find students know little about the era, and tend to really enjoy it. They love seeing the ways the musicians interacted with one another, and the ways their legacies influence our music today. Plus, we get to play great music while we research and write!
This packet guides students through writing introductions with appropriate hooks and claims, body paragraphs with transition and evidence-based language, and strong conclusions. It reviews formal language, proper citation and MLA format. It includes two rubrics: one for the written final essay, and one for a fun musician poster created alongside the essay. It truly is a jam-packed and comprehensive 8 pages.
Enjoy. Happy teaching!
