Music is universal! Here is the music that I made for my youngest classes. I do this EVERY day with each class kindergarten to grade 2. It builds very slowly on the most basic concepts about written music (and I find actually helps them read!). They love that they get time with a friend and an instrument. You will see a picture of how I have a scale on my wall (I use do ré mi, but you can use c d e just the same). You will need to put colour-coded stickers on one octave of all your instruments. As they get closer to the end of the sclae, the colours slowly disappear so by the end of grade 2 usually, they can read a whole scale of music all by themselves!
I get my kindergardens to read at least up to Mi (E), grade ones read up to Sol (G), and my grade 2s finish the scale!
We use this as center time, I have a couple other ones I use too but mostly students are on instruments reading music.
I use a ninja theme and pretend like each note they master is like getting a 'ninja belt' as their name moves up the scale on my wall but you can do whatever you would like with this! Stay tuned for music from the rest of the scale!
