Jefferson’s Sons: A Founding Father's Secret Children is a novel of historical fiction by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley set in the early 1800s. Students may have prior knowledge of Thomas Jefferson, but this book presents the untold stories of Jefferson's enslaved children. [Even though this is “historical fiction”, most historians today agree that Jefferson was most likely the father of Sally Hemings’ children.] Lexile 600 (grades 3 and up)
The author, in my opinion, handled a sensitive subject with great diplomacy. This book is appropriate even for young readers and speaks to everyone's need to feel love and belonging.
