Thanks for checking out my Jelly Bean Descriptive Writing Lessons! This is a great way to start out the year, or to focus on being more descriptive in your writing. And what better way to learn than with Jelly Beans!
You will find 6 detailed lessons, 10 extension lesson ideas, 2 different classroom/bulletin board displays to create with your students’ writing, an evaluation rubric, and a proofreading marks chart for your classroom. The chart is also great to include inside your students’ writing binders/journals as a reference tool.
Each lesson is designed for students to be engaged in their learning. The mini lesson teaches the strategy and then allows students to work on their own writing. While the students write, you can meet with small groups to differentiate instruction based on students’ needs. Feel free to tweak the lessons, too, for your own classroom – you know your kids the best!
The only thing that you will need to purchase for these lessons is a bag of Jelly Beans. The more flavors, the more diverse your students writing will be!
Sneak Peak Lesson Overview:
Lesson 1: Using 5 senses to describe; generating ideas & prewriting
Lesson 2: Revising for specific language
Lesson 3: Writing 1st draft using a topic sentence, specific details and an effective conclusion
Lesson 4: Focus on editing
Lesson 5: Publishing and sharing
Lesson 6: Revision Lesson - Tired Words (this is an extra lesson that can be used anytime with any writing unit. Works well between Lesson 1 and Lesson 2)
These lessons are perfect for 4th grade CCSS Writing/Language standards. The lessons cover many 3rd grade CCSS standards as well. Fifth grade would benefit with these lessons at the beginning of the year as a review and as a tool for you to see how well they write.
