Goal 2- Teaching Reading Engagement-Focus, Stamina, and Building a Reading Life.
Who is the goal for? Engagement is everything so any kid who is struggling to stay on task and focused. Watch your students during a reading period to discover which students need this strategy.
2.1 A Perfect Reading Spot. Level-any, Genre-any, and skill-focus
Students need to know what environment is best for them to stay focused. Ask students to think about lighting, quiet or noisy, hard or soft seating, laying down or sitting up. Have students try different ones and reflect on how it went.
2.2 Vary the Length or Type of Text (“Break Reads”). Level-any, Genre-any, and skill-focus
When reading longer text students can struggle. Have students decide how far they can read and have them mark it with a sticky note, bookmark, etc.

2.8 Set a Timed Goal. Level-any, Genre-any, and skill-stamina
Strategy- to increase the amount of time you read you need to set a goal, use a timer, have a quick get up, stretch break, or respond break, and then get back to reading. Stamina has become a big problem for our students and we need to bring their attention to it.
2.14 Track Progress on a Stamina Chart. Level- F and above, Genre-any, and Skills- stamina and focus
Strategy- Pay attention to how focused, engaged, and distracted you are. Use a chart to keep track of how long you can read and how engaged you are.

2.17 Visualize to Focus
Strategy- Create a picture in your mind and add and change it as you read to help you stay focused.
When readers are engaged they are better able to understand what they read and in depth.
2.18 Reading Log Rate Reflection. Level- K and above, Genre-any, Skill-Improving Reading Rate
Reading logs are reflection tools to learn about your progress and how you can continue to grow. Look for volume of reading at home and school, what conditions they read best in, how many minutes, how many books, what types of books, and how many pages read.
2.22 Buzz About Books. Level K and above, Genre-any, Skill-Recommending Books
Strategy- Recommend books to classmates by telling the books you enjoy and explain why.
