This unit will engage your students in nonfiction by using the well loved Jerry Pallotta books! In this unit you will explore his use of text features and how he uses them in his books as a learning strategy. Small groups will culminate at the end for students own alphabet research!
In this unit students will ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key events in a text and determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.
RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g. captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.They will describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text. and compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
Students will write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g. because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section and write informative/ explanatory text in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
In the end students will participate in shared research and writing project.
