Jewel Fish is a dice counting game for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. The mat features a friendly purple fish who is missing some of its scales.
Make four copies of the mat and laminate for extra durability. Use the mat with plastic jewels and gems (found at most craft stores). Students take turn rolling the dice and adding sparkly scales to their fish. The first person to have 25 scales is the winner (you can decrease or increase the number as needed). I updated the game in June 2015 and included addition/subtraction cards you can use instead of dice.
I use this game in one of my Guided Math stations. It is a fun way to practice counting and one-to-one correspondence. You can also use it in Language Arts with the book Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.
