As an intro to my unit on the Civil Rights movement, I give this as my warm-up the very first day of the new unit. This includes a short worksheet, and on the back, a journaling question. This serves as both a warm-up and an exit ticket for the day that I collect for scoring. The goal is to introduce students to multiple Jim Crow laws, to gain a "shock" factor over the oppression faced if you were colored in the South, and to have a cross-curricular writing activity.
I first review what a Jim Crow law is, and then have them fill out the front side of this worksheet. After we have talked about Jim Crow laws, lynching, and Emmitt Till, I have them complete the journaling question on the back. There isn't much prep work for you...... just print and done!
*assignment can also be used as a short homework activity*
