Introduce students to the discrimination encountered by Asian immigrants and Native Americans in the state of California. After learning about the Jim Crow Laws of Reconstruction, students will think this fill in the blank worksheet is super easy as they will assume that the answer to every question is "African American". As you go over the answers they will discover that racism extended well beyond black and white on the west coast. This lesson is an opportunity to make parallels between the events of Reconstruction and the expansion of the West. Using actual text from real laws in California, students will see that legalized racism existed for many Americans.
