The jigsaw strategy enables students to cover large
portions of a text in a short period of time and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts. Using the jigsaw technique, individual students become experts on one portion of a text and then share their experiences with others in a small group.
Conducting a Jigsaw Reading Session:
•Select a text and divide it into portions that are equal in content weight
•Assign a portion of the text to each student
•Ask each student to read his/her text and take notes
•Ask each student to decide on the most important points to teach others who did not read that section
•Allow time for reading and preparation of presentation
•Following the order of the passage, have students share information about their sections aloud
•Encourage students to take notes on the presented material and to question each other.
