Throughout the CCSS, an increased emphasis on writing and authentic application is evident. To motivate my students throughout the writing process and allow for authentic audiences and purposes, I’ve created this job application activity. It can be used as anything from a way to assign classroom jobs to a preparation activity for a field trip when students have a role to perform. Another creative way to use it is to have students reflect on what they’ve learned about careers after a unit of study including biographies, role models, or jobs throughout history. The possibilities are endless, and I hope this ready-made packet will ease your planning and preparation time.
This packet includes four structured planning pages, one page of sentence stems for detail and support sentences, three pages of differentiated checklists for organizing their ideas into paragraphs, and one page of lined paper. The first four pages provide a way for students to make sure they’ve included everything that’s needed to meet the requirements of standard introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs while giving clues about how to make that happen. The sentence stems give students a way to vary their sentence structures, and the page can be used as a tool for revising. The checklists help students take their planning and organize it into paragraphs. There are separate checklists for three, four, and five paragraph essays. The teacher may choose which one to use with the class or use them for differentiated instruction. Each planning page is built to be used independently, so teachers can create packets with the pages needed for each stage of writing. You can even start with fewer paragraphs and build up to lengthier essays as your students improve their stamina. The lined paper can be copied and used for drafting or writing their final copies.
