This complete job shadow Word formatted packet (PDF format also sold on this site) will assist the teacher on setting up a Job Shadow Day. This packet includes a student job shadow checklist, a parent information sheet, a parent confirmation sheet, a letter to the job shadow host, an employer evaluation form, and an interview form. Follow-up activities are also part of the packet, and include student directions to write a thank you letter to their host and a reflective summary about their experience. The teacher evaluation form will assist in assigning a grade to each student.
Job Shadow Tips:
1. Prior to school beginning, discuss this event with your administrator.
2. Send out a letter to your local Chamber of Commerce letting them know that students will be calling to ask for a job shadow experience. Some employers may not want to participate, while others are more than happy to take several students.
3. Submit the date to the office for the school calendar.
4. Let your food service director know that students will be absent on the set date.
5. Once school is in session, send out an email to your staff announcing the date with a list of student who will be absent.
6. Remember, it is the students’ responsibility to secure their own job shadow host/location. But you may need to make suggestions.
7. Set the confirmation sheet due date at least two weeks before the actual job shadow date.
8. Instruct students on how to prepare an envelope from the address they list on their confirmation sheet, and mail the host letter, interview form and employer evaluation to the host, along with a self-addressed envelope. This information to the host solves many problems and unanswered questions before the day of the event. Employers appreciate the heads up and reminders!
All students job shadow on the same day and receive a school related absence in my classes. Students must be with the employer for at least three hours. Leaving the entire day open for the three-hour slot makes it more convenient for area employers to fit the time into their schedules.
When returning to school, students must bring their completed interview form. Follow-up activities then take place in the classroom. I don't add the employer evaluation to the student's grade, but I want to know how their day went and their opinion about the program.
