Joey the snowman learns about Mixtures and Solutions is a series of 6 mini lessons designed to teach or reteach the concepts of mixtures and solutions. The concepts of mixtures is addressed first with an explanation and activities to practice defining and identifying what constitutes a mixture and what does not during lessons 1 to 3. In lessons 4 to 6 Solutions are explained as a type of mixture with an explanation of how it is different from the mixtures that the students just learned about. The explanation is followed up with opportunities for the students to identify and define what a solution is and is not. Connections are made between mixtures and solutions and the fact that they are physical changes because they do not change the original substances. Each lesson will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete and requires no additional materials. I designed these mini lessons to reteach the mixtures and solutions to targeted fifth grade students who had not mastered this skill on interim assessments, however these lesson can be done with a whole class and could be used for grades 3 -6. The lessons take the student through the mixtures and solutions as they assist Joey the snowman and bird in identifying and classifying mixtures and solutions. These lessons can be used together as an instructional unit or separately to target needed skills for individual students.
