PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Novel Study Activities ( These can be used with one novel you do not have to read all three to use the following activities)

Character Tracker – Track traits throughout the novel. A response to literature essay questions asks students to reflect on them.

Summarizing- Have students log main events in each chapter, then reflect on the chapter with alternating activities including: connections, predictions, questions and opinion.
2 different formats to choose from for your students needs.

Figurative Language- Find figurative language use throughout the novel. Help to improve writing by re-writing a passage with figurative language.

Determining Theme- This theme reflection for each novel uses guiding questions to help students determine the theme. Response to literature question asks them defend their claim using at least 2 pieces of supporting evidence.

Vocabulary- Use this vocabulary tracker in order for students to track the following: New words (Words they don’t know the meaning of), Important words (Words that have significance to the story) Words for their writing (words they would want to add into their own writing piece)

Author Study Activities ( More than one novel should be read in order to use these activities different formats provided for whole class read aloud of multiple novels and reading groups who read different novels)

Characters grow and change- Compare the characters and their traits from each novel. Have students list traits so they can see similarities and differences.

View Point Tracker- Determine the view point of each novel, use evidence to support this. Then have students discuss why the author made these choices and how they effect the way the story is told.

Setting- Have students find a citation from the text that helps them to visualize the setting in their text. Then have students draw a picture. If students are meeting in groups that have read different novels. Have them read their citation to their group members and let them sketch before they share their own picture.

Discussion questions- This is to be used if each group reads a different novel. These questions will help groups to think about the differences and similarities they have discovered in the text. Put students into mixed novel groups to share.
