Baroque Art Era
Johannes Vermeer, 1632 – 1675 was a Dutch painter of interior scenes of middle-class life. This was the life which he led with his family so he painted what he knew. He produced relatively few paintings but they are all highly prized ones. They number just around 34. Vermeer set his paintings in two rooms in his house in Delft. He used very expensive pigments and worked carefully and deliberately with them. He was a master of the use of light in his paintings.
He painted mostly women in those two rooms, often involved in some domestic pursuit. He achieved recognition while alive in both Delft and The Hague but was soon forgotten after his death. In the 19th century, Vermeer was discovered anew and grew steadily thereafter. Vermeer's reputation is today so high that he is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. His paintings sell for hundreds of millions of dollars. The one stolen from the Gardener Museum is now thought to be worth almost $200 million.
