Let's face it. Sometimes showing a video in class just gives some kids the excuse to try to sleep or get distracted by other things. Kids ALWAYS learn more from a video when they are waiting for an answer, and this video sheet is your answer to Episode 2 of John Adams! This contains a graphic organizer for Episode 2, Independence, from the HBO series "John Adams."
This episode can be finished in 1 hour and 31 minutes and covers the time while John is in the Continental Congress. The episode begins with the 1st Continental Congress and John Adams' frustration at its lack of real action. It then shows the countryside after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, beginning the Revolutionary War. However, Independence does not come for over a year and 3 months. During this time more battles will be fought, and Adams tries to convince certain delegates and states to join in declaring Independence. Many still think peace is possible, or that Britain will grant the colonies their rights. Adams will have a difficult time in bringing them to his side.
This graphic organizer guides students through the episode. They must be able to answer reasons for and against taking up arms, declaring independence, and some things about certain characters. This organizer will help your students remember and understand the events in this episode with little effort on your part!
