John Cage 4'33'" is a piece that is Four Minutes and Thirty Three Seconds of complete silence. Students will debate whether or not that should be considered music at all.
Section 1. 4'33"' Listening Activity
Students are introduced to John Cage first in a way that demonstrates he writes beautiful music. Students then are exposed to the song 'Four Minutes and Thirty Three Seconds" and decide whether or not they think it is music and why.
Note: In order for the videos to work in this lesson plan, you must have internet!
Section 2. Court Trial
The slide show is designed as a court trial, where the students will take John Cages song to court. Students may choose any side they like and have a debate. The slides include opening statements for both sides, providing evidence for both sides, and closing statements for each side. Each slide has timers for you to allow the pacing to stay on track. The court trial proceeds by the following structure:

5. Both sides engage in discussion

8. Teacher (The Judge) gets the final word
